Universal Design

Bradley J. Butcher, AIA believes in the philosophy of Universal Design and supports the principles of UD throughout his residential work.  Not familiar with the concept?  The premise of Universal Design is 'the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible without the need for adaptation or specialized design'.

The seven principles of Universal Design are as follows:

  • Equitable Use

  • Flexibility in Use

  • Simple and Intuitive

  • Perceptible Information

  • Tolerance for Error

  • Low Physical Effort

  • Size and Space for Approach and Use

We encourage and utilize these principles in the design of residences for our clients.  Long term planning makes homes usable and accommodating for our clients regardless of age or physical limitations.  For more information on UD, visit The Center for Universal Design at www.design.ncsu.edu/cud.
